Continental USA – Remote
SALES & MARKETING INTERN
We’re currently seeking a U.S. based intern to help us build our international business from the ground up. Initially, this will be an unpaid internship but with a salary linked to sales commission, there’s potential for it to grow quickly into something actually worth your time.
The position requires 5-10 hours per week, though we’re looking for someone who can grow with the company and potentially come on board full-time in about two years. The applicant must have his or her own computer/laptop, and have internet access.
-Adobe Creative Suite
-Google Docs/Sheets etc.
-Social media savvy
-Ability to assist with registration of a U.S.-based wholesale business
Essentially, we are building up a network of talented artisans in East Africa. The vision is to build an Etsy-like platform that allows them to represent themselves in the USA for both retail and wholesale sales, but without the financial risk of purchasing materials and creating products without guarantee of a customer (i.e. we will place orders, or collect them from wholesale accounts). While we’ll figure out the registration and logistics in East Africa, you’ll be setting up the U.S.A. end of things. We’re looking for a jack-of-all-trades who can help build our online and social media presence, manage shipping, and build wholesale connections.
After working in East Africa for 7 years, we’ve noticed that artisans here don’t have as much of a voice in their representation online. (Check out the difference in an “artisan interview” between a western artisan and an African artisan almost anywhere online) They are usually represented by larger companies who tell their stories on their behalf. We want to give them a chance to represent themselves and tell their own stories. Unfortunately, things like start-up capital, internet access, and lack of technology often stand in the way of truly gifted makers. We want to connect them to the world, on their own terms.
We’re hoping to find someone who loves the vision just as much as we do, and is looking for an opportunity to help build something from the ground-up. You’ll learn a lot, and ideally one day, build this into a career.
